The Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Harborough District Council, Cllr Phil Knowles has warmly welcomed the launch of a petition by his colleagues on Leicestershire County Council regarding the on going public concerns at street lighting levels across the county.
Phil Knowles remarked: ''Simon Galton and the team are to be congratulated. They have identified that this issue is causing a great deal of concern amongst the public. The Lib Dems at County have clearly recognised the levels of public dismay and Simon and colleagues clearly empathise with public calls for some sort of rethink by the controlling group. Some residents worry about the safety aspects, others have questions about the loss of lighting and the potential relationship to crime figures. The Liberal Democrats at County Hall will hopefully secure considerable public support as we take this petition on to the streets across the County, support that will assist in forcing this issue back on to the agenda.''
Only a few weeks ago Cllr Knowles met with a senior officer at the Police HQ in Harborough outlining the calls, comments and concerns raised with him by residents in South Leicestershire. ''Perhaps we might be able to encourage Police support for the County to take another look at the lighting levels and the actions/way forward that the County Controlling Group are taking''
