High Peak Liberal DemocratsThe Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin MP, has confirmed Stockport, Manchester, and Cheshire East councils' planning permission for the A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road.
Following careful consideration by the Department for Transport, it has been decided that the scheme will not be called in for a Planning Public Inquiry.
The next step towards the realisation of the scheme are Side Road Orders and Compulsory Purchase Orders. The National Transport Casework Team from Department for Transport has written to the councils advising the date of the associated inquiries on these orders; for those effecting Stockport it will be 30th September 2014, held at Cheshire Conference & Events (Stockport County FC), Edgeley Park, Stockport, SK3 9DD.
The same letter has been issued to objectors and supporters of the Side Road Orders and Compulsory Purchase Orders.
Commenting on the decision by the Department for Transport, local MP Mark Hunter said:
'An infrastructure project of this size requires many hoops to be jumped through. I am glad that the Department for Transport has backed the three councils' decisions to grant planning permission and that the project can move forward to the next stage.
'This scheme will significantly reduce congestion in residential areas, as well as providing a boost to the local economy. It is well supported by local residents, and I am pleased that the three councils as well as MPs from all parties are working together to finally see the project through to fruition.'
