This was a Labour held seat, with no doubt a sympathy vote following the death of sitting councillor and former Mayor. At this stage in the political cycle, when Labour are not in Government locally or nationally, they should have increased their share of the vote (but they did not).
Jill has worked very hard promoting the Liberal Democrats since she was elected as County Councillor for Sixfields, which includes part of St James, in 2013 and achieved a massive increase in our share of the vote. She was just 46 votes short of victory and I know that she is very appreciative of the support that she has received from Lib Dem colleagues and scared the life out of the two main parties (we probably did not scare UKIP)
The big message from this election was the Tory performance …. They came 4th....their vote halved compared to 2011 (193 vs. 398) a complete rejection in St James of the Borough Council record since 2011
