High Peak Liberal DemocratsAndrew Stunell MP & Lisa Smart PPC welcomed Breast Cancer Campaign's 'Spread the word' campaign to highlight that there are still too many people dying from breast cancer in Stockport and all across the UK.
Andrew Stunell MP has been getting behind the campaign, commenting he said -
"There's been excellent progress towards beating breast cancer over the past 20 years but thousands of people across the UK are living with a diagnosis of secondary breast cancer - when cancer has spread from the breast to other parts of the body - for which there is no cure. I am therefore supporting Breast Cancer Campaign's 'Spread the word' campaign, to take action for all those affected by breast cancer both locally and across the country."
Lisa Smart, Hazel Grove's Prospective MP said -
"This is such an important campaign, and one that I strongly welcome. Too many women are dying from breast cancer, 59 a year in Stockport alone, this is not good enough. This campaign will bring together all those people who passionately believe in beating this disease to take action to help save more lives in the future."
253 women a year are diagnosed with breast cancer in Stockport, on average. (The breast cancer incidence rate in Stockport is 132.15 per 100,000, which is not significantly different from the England average of 124.85).
The screening coverage in Stockport (percentage of eligible women between the ages of 53 to 70 who have had a mammogram in the three years prior to 31st March 2013) is 73.4, which is below the England average of 76.4%.
