Wedding bells for 1,400 same-sex couples
The Liberal Democrats are celebrating the first 1400 same-sex marriages
More than 1,400 happy couples have tied the knot since same-sex marriage came into effect in March. According to figures released today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), 56% of the newlyweds were female couples and 44% were male.
On 29 March, the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 was introduced in England and Wales. 95 couples married in the first three days that the Act came into force. Liberal Democrats were the first party to support same-sex marriage and were delighted to make it law.
LGBT+ Lib Dems executive member Dave Page added, "LGBT+ Lib Dems' motion on same sex marriage became party policy, which helped then Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone MP deliver it in Government. The Liberal Democrats have a fantastic record of support for LGBT+ people, and this demonstrates that. We will seek to further marriage equality, including removal of the Spousal Veto from England & Wales marriage law, and progressing same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland."
