Jo Swinson MP
Celebrating the sixteenth Bi Visibility Day today, Liberal Democrat Minister for Women and Equalities Jo Swinson MP said:
"I'm proud that this has been a momentous year for LGBT equality. The first marriages of same-sex couples have taken place in England and Wales, and the UK has once again been ranked number one in Europe for LGBT rights.
"Sadly some prejudice remains, which is why I'm very pleased to welcome Bi Visibility Day. It's an opportunity to celebrate the lives and experiences of bisexual people throughout the country and tackle the barriers and challenges they can face.
"I hope that Bi Visibility Day 2014 is a great success and gets more people thinking about the B in LGBT."
LGBT+ Liberal Democrats Secretary Holly Matthies added, "LGBT+ Lib Dems has a long proud record of engagement with the bisexual community, going back even before we changed our name from 'lesbian and gay' to LGBT in the mid 1990s.
"We've been pleased to welcome developments like the Bisexuality Report and the Bi Research Guidelines that have helped to strengthen understanding of the challenges bi people can face."
"As well as being an opportunty to celebrate bisexual people's lives and the work of bi organisations, Bi Visibility Day is a great reminder to focus on how things are different for bisexuals and how we can address issues of bisexual invisibility and biphobia."
