High Peak Liberal Democrats
Lib Dem Councillor Jerry Evans in Birmingham has become the 500th councillor to support the national Space for Cycling campaign - coordinated by CTC - the national cycling charity. The campaign aims to create safe cycling conditions on UK roads - so that anyone feels comfortable moving around by bike - and the funding needed to implement this.Jerry Evans joins East Midlands Lib Dems Cllr Steve Carr in Nottinghamshire, Cllr Michael Mullaney in Leicestershire and Cllr Sarah Uldall in Northamptonshire.
Nationally, it has been over a year since the Lib Dems adopted the recommendations of the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group as party policy - including spending £10 per person per year with the aim that 10% of trips are taken by bike by 2025. The motion was put forward by Cambridge MP Julian Huppert.
An online map of councillors supporting the Campaign has been seen published here with councillors listed by party on this database.
The campaign is only seeking the support of councillors from Local Authorities with Highway Powers. Of the 525 councillors who have signed up outside of London, 112 are Liberal Democrat. Councillors can sign up to the campaign at www.space4cycling.org.uk/councillors
Cllr Jerry Evans in Birmingham said, "As a councillor in one of the UK's eight Cycling Cities, I can readily see what is achieved for cycling when there is funding of £10 per head per year. However with this sum drying up after only 2 years I can also see the risk of not having long term consistent cycle funding. We need committed funding for cycling and strong central leadership - only then will we achieve space for cycling."
