High Peak Liberal Democrats
LGBT Lib Dems executive and activists at our 2015 Winter Strategy Conference
LGBT+ Lib Dems met at party HQ in Westminster last weekend for their annual Winter Strategy Conference. Activists from around the country, including our President, Baroness Liz Barker, assembled to plan objectives for the year, including policy and campaigning. A full report will be sent to members, including information from the recent Members' Survey.
New chair Dave Page said, "This was one of our busiest and most productive strategy conferences to date, including those before the last General Election. The Liberal Democrats have led on LGBT+ equality and liberation for decades from opposition, and we've now proved we can deliver in Government. It is clear that the stronger the Liberal Democrat presence in Parliament, the more MPs we elect, the more equality we can deliver and the faster we can deliver it.
"We also have a duty to make sure that the voices of LGBT+ people at home and abroad are not drowned out by the clamour of the General Election. There are outstanding and pressing issues that the Liberal Democrats must always seek to improve, whether it's the spousal veto against trans people in English and Welsh marriage law, the LGBT+ asylum seekers we defended against the Labour Government who told them to go home and be discreet, the people being harrassed and murdered in former British colonies of the Commonwealth under laws we imposed, or the dark shadow of suicide and mental health problems particularly facing LGBT+ people which Norman Lamb and Nick Clegg have stepped up to act upon."
The next LGBT+ Lib Dems Strategy Conference, open to all full members, will be in June in Manchester.
