High Peak Liberal DemocratsMark Argent will take on sitting Tory MP Andrew Bridgen who is defending a 7,511 majority.
Mr Argent is from Cambridge but said he only moved there a few weeks ago for work reasons having lived in Rothley near Loughborough.
The 50-year-old, who works in publishing and web design, said: "It's appalling timing to be honest and it leaves me with a two hour drive when I want to campaign but I do know the area.
"I'm honoured that I have been chosen to stand.
"I have met many local people and the majority have made it clear that they want a full time MP fighting for a better deal for this constituency.
"I am proud of the Liberal Democrat record in government and look forward to representing the people of North West Leicestershire in Westminster, standing up for those who are feeling let down and neglected by the other parties who simply don't understand what the people of this constituency want from their elected government."
Mr Argent said he would like to see the Ivanhoe rail line, from Leicester through Coalville to Burton, reopened to passengers.
He also said he would work to ensure compensation was fair for anyone affected by the proposed HS2 line that is slated to cut through the constituency.
He added: "North West Leicestershire will be a tough one for us but it is worth trying."
Liberal Democrat county councillor Michael Wyatt for the Warren Hills in North West Leicestershire, said: "I'm absolutely delighted to welcome Mark to our Lib Dem Team in North West Leics. I'm sure he will be a great asset, and like me he's determined to make sure people are given a real choice of who will represent North West Leicestershire in Westminster.
Labour has selected Jamie McMahon as its prospective parliamentary candidate and Dr Andy McWilliam will contest the seat for UKIP.
