New figures have shown 50 people have signed up to join the party in Nottingham this year as the Liberal Democrat fightback begins.

Tad Jones, Vice Chair of Nottingham City Liberal Democrats, said: "It is really heartening to see so many people join the Liberal Democrats to work for a more liberal city and country. Our local party is now one of the fastest growing in the East Midlands.

"This party is far from dead and buried. We're recruiting people who have never joined a party before, but know the Liberal Democrats will fight for their values and aspirations. They appreciate the need for a liberal voice to speak out on fairness, equality and freedom.

"They also recognise the hard work our activists and campaigners do for their local communities and the difference they can make. "

Across the UK, membership of the party has now risen to 57,364 with 12,399 people joining since polling day. To be able to vote for the next Liberal Democrat leader new members need to have joined by the 3rd of June.

Tad Jones is Vice Chair of the Nottingham City Liberal Democrats and was the Liberal Democrat candidate for Nottingham East in the 2015 General Election.
