High Peak Liberal DemocratsWe aimed to try to get responses that shed some light on where they think the party stands now and what sort of party they want to lead, rather than opinions on specific policy issues. Both were given the same questions and allowed up to 1,500 words to use as they chose to answer them.
1. The general election has exposed the Liberal Democrat core vote at only 7.9% of the electorate. Should the party continue to maintain it can 'win everywhere' or build a core vote, and if so from where should a core vote be built?
2. What are you most proud of among the Coalition's actions, and least proud?
3. If you were in the same position as Nick Clegg was over tuition fees, (a pledge made then broken) how would you handle the problem?
4. Nick Clegg has frequently been criticised for surrounding himself with advisers inexperienced in practical politics. From where would you draw your advice?
5. Some argue the recent general election campaign was fought as a centrist party aiming to blunt the actions of others, rather than on Lib Dem policies. What did you think of it, and what you do differently in future?
6.What should be the Liberal Democrat response to the rise of Scottish and English nationalism?
7. Would you regard your election as leader as a mandate to take the party in a particular direction, and if so, what?
In the rest of the magazine we have reflections on the election, and what should be done to begin recovery, from: Roger Hayes, Jennie Rigg, Gordon Lishman, Michael Meadowcroft, Fran Oborski and many others.
