High Peak Liberal DemocratsAt their Autumn conference in Bournemouth this morning, Liberal Democrat members overwhelmingly passed a motion making more action on on trans and intersex healthcare official party policy, including calling for a independent inquiry into widespread and systemic abuse of transgender people within the health service.
Proposing the motion, which was submitted by LGBT+ Liberal Democrats, Sarah Noble said: "We just want the rights of everyone else. We want health care, free at the point of delivery. We want to be free from discrimination. We want to be able to change our names and our genders without unnecessary bureaucracy. We want our friends who don't identify completely as either male or female to be recognised. And we want our doctors to stop mutilating children."
Sarah Brown, fellow LGBT+ LibDems Executive member also spoke, "The way the medical community treats both trans and intersex people betrays a medical community that has not learned from the decades it spent trying to "normalise" lesbian, gay and bisexual people. It has to stop, and it has to stop now."
The debate also saw a contribution from party president Baroness Sal Brinton, who paid tribute to the work of Baroness Barker and former Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone in securing same-sex marriage and renewed calls for Liberal Democrats to work towards fully equal marriage.
The full text of the motion is available on pages 28-31 of the conference agenda.
