High Peak Liberal Democrats
The battle has begun: this morning Britain Stronger in Europe is launched as the cross-party campaign to keep Britain in Europe. Supported by a broad spectrum of leading figures from business, politics and the arts, the campaign is focused on making the patriotic case for membership. But now the phoney war is over will the debate move on from who's backing who to a serious debate about the UK's future in Europe? With Britain Stronger in Europe now officially launched the campaign proper can begin. Until now the Europhobes have dominated the air waves and while the battle between the two out campaigns is currently a cause for amusement amongst pro-membership supporters, they will eventually combine forces.
All over Europe politics and politicians are unpopular, a fact that the outers will cynically play on. They will accuse the in campaign of being unpatriotic and of being a bunch of self-centred, elite politicians. They also want the UK debate solely to be about transactional issues - how much do we pay into the EU and what do we get for our money? The in campaign must push this whiney, defeatist, little Englander argument to one side if it is to capture the public's imagination and do justice to the gravity of the decision voters must make. The debate needs to focus on the bigger questions, about our prosperity, our security and whether Britain is a leader or a follower in Europe and the world.
