High Peak Liberal DemocratsGeoff was a stalwart of the Stamford Liberal Democrats, joining the party in the 1980s. He was elected to Stamford Town Council in 1987 and had the honour of being Mayor in 1993. He was a fervent Liberal Democrat with a passionate interest in educational opportunity. He was always kind and courteous. He remained active, politically, until about 10 years ago although he kept up with events and news and was always happy to argue our case
He was chair of Stamford Liberal Democrats for several years and was closely involved in the production of the 'Focus' leaflets for numerous election campaigns. As Chair of the Cemetery and Allotments Committee, Geoff was instrumental in bringing the cemetery up to the high standard of today, regaining control of it from SKDC. He was also an active member of Stamford and District Lions' Club and the Twinning Association.
Geoff originally hailed from Sheffield, meeting his future wife, Jean, whilst in the RAF at the close of the war. He was involved in the 1948 Berlin airlift, helping to save the people of West Berlin from starvation during the Soviet blockade, an experience almost certainly forging his belief in internationalism. He was an engineer by profession, moving to Stamford in the 1960s. He and Jean were married on the same day as the Queen in November 1947.
Geoff represented the best of Liberal Democracy, radical but realistic, tolerant, outward looking but also proud of his country. He had strongly held political beliefs and was skilled at defending them.
Our party has lost a good liberal and a passionate democrat.
