PRESS RELEASE FROM EREWASH LIBERAL DEMOCRATS 20TH November, 2015

Erewash AGM 2015 - Lord Wallace and Martin Garnett

LIB DEM PEER IN LONG EATON VISIT

Liberal Democrat peer Lord William Wallace of Saltaire visited Long Eaton on Thursday to meet members of Erewash Liberal Democrats and to address the local party's Annual General Meeting. The peer was formerly the House of Lords spokesperson for the Coalition Government on Foreign Policy, Work and Pensions and Education. He presented the keynote speech on the subject of the "LibDemFightBack" campaign which has seen 60,000 new members join the party since last May's General Election.

He also spoke on the twin themes of the achievements of the Lid Dems in Coalition and the importance of achieving an "IN" vote in the upcoming Euro Referendum.

He described life as a minister in the Coalition government and the difficulties and rewards of being a member of the junior party in the Coalition. He expressed his pride in the number of Lib Dem policies they were able to get on to the statute books and his concern that the new Tory government was rolling so many of these important measures back again, particularly in the area of Green subsidies.

On the Euro Referendum he emphasised the need to listen to the voices of younger people who had been shown in many polls to be in favour of a strong European Community with Great Britain as a key player. He said "Just this week, we forced the Government to think again to allow 16 and 17 year olds to vote in the Euro Referendum. This is their future and we must harness their willingness to become involved on this key issue for their generation."

His address was followed by a lively session of questions and debate covering a wide range of topics such as the challenge of the Paris terrorist attacks, HS2 and transport policy and the proposed D2N2 devolution proposals which could see an elected mayor in overall charge of Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire.

The attendance and enthusiasm at the meeting particularly impressed him and he said "After a difficult election result it is encouraging to see so many new and energetic members of the Erewash local party at this meeting".

After congratulating the new Executive Committee he wished the party well and extended an invitation to members to visit him at Westminster, "The House Commons and the House of Lords are not perfect but they can work effectively if they work together. Come and see them in action for yourselves!"
