Consultation on EU Citizenship - Have your Say!
The Discussion on the EU Referendum is gathering pace. During our regular European Referendum Campaign Committee Conference call this week we were reminded by Leon about a major Consultation that is taking place on the subject of EU Citizenship. Here are just a few of the details from the EU Website which we hope you might find of interest.
Why not search out the European Website and have your say?

Consultation on EU Citizenship: Share your opinion on our common values, rights and democratic participation
07-12-2015
Policy field(s)
Justice and Fundamental Rights - EU citizenship
Target groups
We welcome responses from all EU citizens, organisations and other stakeholders concerned with advancing EU citizenship.
Period of consultation
From 14 September to 7 December 2015
Objective of the consultation
This public consultation by the European Commission is aimed at all EU citizens, organisations and other stakeholders interested in advancing EU citizenship.
We want to know about any obstacles you might be facing in your daily life as a European citizen living, studying, working, shopping or simply travelling within the EU. We would also like to hear your ideas about how to remove these obstacles and make it simpler for you to enjoy your EU citizenship rights in your daily life.
As a national of an EU country you are also a citizen of the European Union. This gives you a number of important rights including:
- to travel and live anywhere in the EU
- not to be discriminated against on the basis of your nationality
- to vote and stand as a candidate in municipal and European Parliament elections wherever you live in the EU
- if your own country is not represented, to be assisted by another EU country's embassy or consulate outside the EU, under the same conditions as a citizen of that country.

The European Commission is working to safeguard and strengthen your rights. In 2013, the Commission issued an EU Citizenship Report listing 12 actions designed to help citizens enjoy their EU rights in six key areas: removing obstacles for workers, students and trainees in the EU; cutting red tape in the Member States; protecting the more vulnerable members of society; eliminating barriers to shopping in the EU; providing targeted and accessible information on EU rights and enhancing participation in the democratic life of the EU. These actions are now being implemented.
This consultation gives you the opportunity to share your opinion and your experience on matters relating to your rights as an EU citizen as well as on what more the European Commission could do to make your life easier when you exercise your EU rights.
Your views are important. Please tell us what you think.
