Call by East Midlands Councillor for 'Full Review' is supported

East Midlands Councillor Phil Knowles met with top EMAS Bosses following his call for a wide ranging and full over arching review into Ambulance Response Times, Hospital Patient Handover, Beds, Follow on Care, interaction with Social Services and more across the East Midlands.

Richard Henderson (EMAS Deputy Chief Executive/Operations Director) and Mark Gregory, recently appointed General Manager for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland spent almost an hour in discussion with Phil Knowles after the East Midlands Councillor had spent time in the Emergency Control room at the EMAS Nottingham HQ and talked with a number of members of EMAS staff.

During the time spent in the control room it was explained to Cllr Knowles that in just 14 hours the Nottingham Call Centre had taken 1064 calls from across the East Midlands, 135 of which were urgent. The control station in Lincoln also received calls in addition to these figures and this excluded any calls made to the 111 lines. Some staff within the Emergency Centre working 6 hour shifts whilst others worked twelve hour shifts from 7 through to 7.

Speaking after the meeting Cllr Knowles thanked Richard Henderson for agreeing to the meeting and giving him such access to the HQ and staff. Phil Knowles commented '' I had already called publically for an overarching, wide ranging review covering a raft of matters and interactive organisations and it was clear from the comments of both Richard Henderson and Mark Gregory that they not only agree with me, indeed they would want to see the Review to be even more wider ranging . The possibility to include Domiciliary Care, 111 and the service provided plus the referrals. The potential of third party responders. Question marks against some areas of apparent disproportionate growth in handover times, danger levels and more.

There has already been 200 new recruits and £5 million invested into new Ambulances but what more is needed for the services over the coming years and how does it fit in? How does that stack against what appears to be 15/16000 hours lost in Ambulances waiting to hand over to hospital times. this from April to year to date.

We need now to consider how this matter can be elevated and the wide ranging, over arching Review put in place, The concerns that I expressed seemly shared by the professionals is certainly grounds for taking this matter to the next level. Mr Henderson and Mr Gregory have said they would welcome the opportunity to come to South Leicestershire and meet with the public as part of this process. To put ideas on the table and listen to the public. This is something I hope to arrange. Before then I will be in touch with Mr Henderson and Mr Gregory to update them. I think its fair to say that this was the first of what will be a number of meeting and with a variety of contributors to the 'health provision and social care' for the whole of the East Midlands ''
