Brexiteers are trashing the Prime Minister's statesmanlike intervention on Monday and endorsers such as Gen Mike Jackson and 13 former US secretaries of state and 5 NATO secretary-generals. In letters to The Times and the Telegraph, they say that Britain's "place and influence in the world would be diminished and Europe would be dangerously weakened" after Brexit.
But Johnson accuses the PM of "wild scaremongering". Fox dismisses the signatories to the letter as has-beens claiming it is NATO alone, not the EU, that has preserved peace and entrenched British influence.
But NATO and the EU are not mutually exclusive. Can Remainers win the battle to convince the public that our security involves British leadership in both NATO and the EU to achieve the best of both worlds?
