Liz LeffmanTim Farron, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, will make his fourth visit of the campaign to the Witney by-election as it races into its final week.

He will be joined this week by two of his party predecessors, Paddy Ashdown and Ming Campbell, both of whom led the Liberal Democrats to major by-election upsets. Nick Clegg also hopes to make another visit.

Other heavyweights set to help the Lib Dem candidate Liz Leffman - fighting a huge campaign in this previously safe Conservative seat - will include Shirley Williams and Greg Mulholland MP.

Over the weekend a vast army of Lib Dem volunteers came to the 32 Corn St HQ, where after a day of door knocking they were addressed at a rally by Norman Lamb MP, former health minister. He said that after early complacency by the Conservatives, the last-minute visit at the weekend by Theresa May showed that the Tories were now "rattled".

Even the village shop where David Cameron buys his Sunday papers has come over to the Liberal Democrats, with a big orange poster in his window:

"The Lib Dems will be focusing on stopping cuts to local hospitals and surgeries, standing up for local jobs and protecting our countryside"

Liz Leffman said: "There can hardly be a starker message to the Conservatives than the poster in David Cameron's local shop. In pushing to leave the Single Market they are playing Russian roulette with the British economy.

"The Lib Dems will be focusing on stopping cuts to local hospitals and surgeries, standing up for local jobs and protecting our countryside in these last few days of campaign. In Witney we are the real opposition to the Conservative Brexit government."

The bookies have the Liberal Democrats down to 8/1 in a clear two-horse race against the Conservatives, with Labour now 100/1 outsiders.
