High Peak Liberal DemocratsCommenting on the election of Donald Trump as US president, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron said:
Liberal values of moderation, freedom, respect for the rule of law, openness and concern for one another can no longer be taken for granted. In the United States last night, those values were defeated."
Mr Farron argued that never in his lifetime have "liberal values been so under threat, and never have they been more relevant and necessary".

"Extremely depressed today. I fear that the news will encourage leave, which is no longer about Brexit but about power.
"Wins" such as Trump's elections will strengthen them. "Losses" as for example a setback from the supreme court, will strengthen them. They will soon be saying that MPs known to believe remain who have pledged to vote leave, are an example of people power and their success. Inflation will certainly strengthen their hand. Farage grows bigger every day.
"I do not want to wake up one day and find that all the pollsters were wrong, they have won a general election. I seriously advocate the parties of the left and centre, and Open Britain Tories, start considering not fighting each other at the polls and thus letting the far right in. But I suppose that's too much to hope for."
