Just occasionally, politics becomes real and relevant to people who are not generally interested in it! We've seen a lot of that this year, with the Brexit vote and the elections overseas of populist figures such as Donald Trump. And in these cases, many of us have been taken aback by the passions and bad feeling that these events have generated.

Interestingly, we appear to have the beginnings of a similar movement here on our doorstep. We Lib Dems have been talking for some time about the poor state of healthcare services in rural areas like Lincolnshire. This came to a head a few months ago when Grantham Hospital had to start shutting their A&E department every night from 6.30pm to 9am and the first horror stories emerged about our ambulance service… and this has been followed by further announcements regarding the closure of the neurology department, and the likely transfer of all maternity services to Boston & Lincoln! This has led to the unprecedented step yesterday of the release of an open letter to the people of Lincolnshire signed by Tim Farron, Nick Clegg, Ming Campbell & Paddy Ashdown, urging people to take action and vote for Ross Pepper, our candidate in Sleaford & North Hykeham, who has been campaigning hard on this issue. You can read their letter here: http://www.lsnhlibdems.org.uk/lincolnshire_s_health_crisis_deepens

These messages seem to be having an impact, as unofficial polling suggests that Ross is now in second place… which is a massive improvement on where the Lib Dems were at the start of his campaign. So there really is everything to play for in the next 48 hours, and I know that Ross, Ed and the entire team would be very grateful for any help you can give them in the final push. You can contact the team on 01529 309386.

Finally, and thinking a little further ahead, the Lib Dem Spring Conference is coming up soon, and if you've never attended a national event before, you might want to consider coming along. It will be held in York on 17-19 March (so it's easy to get to by train or car) and there are discounts on conference passes until 9 Dec, with first time attendees paying a flat fee of only £35, and other discounts for senior citizens and students etc. http://www.libdems.org.uk/spring-conference I have always found attending conference very energising and informative- and you get to meet a lot of interesting and fun people! It would be lovely if you could join us there!

Take care, and speak soon
