High Peak Liberal DemocratsTim Farron, leader of the Liberal Democrats, has welcomed the news that the European Parliament will today approve the grant to the UK to repair damage caused by the floods in 2015.
Tim personally lobbied the European Parliament to make this grant in a visit to Brussels last year. Tonight, he has called for the money to be distributed to areas in the country worst hit by flooding as soon as possible by the UK Government.
Tim said: "The Government dragged their feet in making this application - only sending it in at the very last minute. Had they applied sooner, communities across the country would be recovering from the 2015 floods far quicker, instead bridges remain in disrepair, roads damaged and the wider infrastructure lies unfixed.
"Now the grant has been approved, the Government need to use it on the ground rather than offsetting it against money they have already spent, as they have threatened.
"This is just another example of one of the many benefits we gained from being a part of the EU. The next time we are hit with devastating weather we may not be so lucky."
