High Peak Liberal DemocratsTim Farron, leader of the Liberal Democrats, has renewed his call for Theresa May to return from holiday to take charge of the worsening international crisis surrounding Syria, rather than leaving the accident-prone Boris Johnson to negotiate with allies he has previously insulted.
Tim Farron said:
"Boris Johnson is reportedly struggling to persuade countries such as Germany, France and Italy to agree to sanctions on Russia. The arguments are complex. But the difficulties the Foreign Secretary is experiencing should underline to this Conservative Brexit government the importance of working with our European partners rather than lecturing and insulting them.
"It is time Theresa May returned to Downing Street to take charge, rather than allowing the court jester to become the crown prince.
"Sanctions are an important way of putting pressure on Russia, but they should not distract us from the urgent humanitarian need to protect large numbers of innocent people threatened with death in this barbarous, brutal civil war. For this we must continue to work for a united response, from the G7 and regional powers."
