High Peak Liberal DemocratsResponding to Theresa May's comments on the Andrew Marr Show when asked about nurses going to food banks, Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael said:
"This shows just how out of touch Theresa May is.
"When asked about the scandal of nurses going to food banks, all she could respond with were empty slogans.
"Nurses, teachers and police are all seeing a relentless Brexit squeeze to their incomes under this Conservative government, as wages fall and prices go up.
"This problem is set to get worse, with nurses facing a 12% pay cut by the end of the decade as a result of rising inflation.
"This election is a chance to change Britain's future and protect our NHS and people's living standards from a disastrous hard Brexit."
Anita Day, Parliamentary Candidate for Grantham and Stamford adds:
"As I know from my work with the foodbanks in this constituency, demand for their support continues to increase.
"In Grantham, where I am a trustee, there has been a 9% increase in the number of people supported in the last year (2015-2016), and there is evidence that more low-paid workers are now needing their help, not just people on benefits.
"The Tories are good at talking about getting people into work and looking after ordinary working families, but the numbers speak for themselves..... nurses, teachers & the police should not need food handouts to support their families!"
Nurses will see their pay cut by 12% over a decade, according to a recent report by the Health Foundation thinktank (link)
