PrEP on the NHS is Lib Dem policy
The Welsh Liberal Democrats have welcomed the beginning of a Welsh NHS PrEP pilot, which has been launched today (17th July 2017).
Commenting, Welsh Lib Dem Equalities Spokesperson Cadan ap Tomos said;
"The beginning of a three-year PrEP pilot in Wales is testament to the work and dedication of campaigners over many years in making the case for this life-saving drug to be made available on the NHS.
"International evidence shows the effectiveness of PrEP in reducing HIV transmission rates, and I look forward to this trial demonstrating just how positive the effect can be for the lives of people living in Wales."
Chair of LGBT+ Lib Dems, Jennie Rigg, added:
"We welcome this step forward towards provision of PrEP. However, Scotland has announced PrEP for all on the NHS; Wales, England and Northern Ireland are falling short. These pilot schemes, when there is already plenty of evidence globally for the efficacy of PrEP, mean more unnecessary HIV transmissions - and more cost to the NHS to treat those affected.
"We hope that the NHS in England and Wales realises this and, in line with Liberal Democrat policy, begins to offer PrEP to all at high risk of HIV transmission without delay. We further hope that HSC in Northern Ireland also takes this measure."
