Patient safety at risk this winter without significant funding & capacity boost for NHS
NHS Providers, the organisation that represents 97% of hospital, mental health, community and ambulance service trusts in England, is calling for an immediate emergency cash injection of between £200 and £350 million to enable the NHS to manage patient safety risk this winter. They warn that the government's failure to make this investment quickly will lead to lengthening waiting times for patients in A&E and other services and will also put the safety of patients at risk.
Commenting on these warnings, Anita Day, Lib Dem Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Grantham & Stamford, said:
"This comes as no surprise to Grantham & Stamford residents. Patients in Grantham have had no Maternity department since 2014, and no evening & overnight A&E for the past year. So local people already face excessively long journeys to Lincoln and other hospitals, and this is particularly dangerous when time is of the essence.
"Last winter, the British Red Cross called the situation in the NHS a humanitarian crisis. But this report from the organisation representing 97% of providers makes it clear that they think that things will be getting even worse this winter. The Government needs to start taking the concerns of NHS staff and patients seriously... people's lives are at risk!"
