"Youth Work Saves Lives - Now We Must Save Youth Work"

Please join us for our chaired panel discussion on the future of Youth Services at our Regional Conference on Saturday 21st October at Southwell Minster School

The Youth Service, across the country, has seen devastating cuts in recent years, as have youth services more widely. Research has shown that around £387m has been cut from Youth Services by local authorities since 2010. Councils, in turn, blame Central Government for this by referencing the reduced budgets they're having to deal with.

Lib Dem policy is that the youth service should be made statutory, meaning Councils have to find the money for it. Because when youth services go or are reduced (especially Council-run, universal, all-year-round youth services), it is often the most vulnerable young people who lose out and, often, then have nowhere else to turn to for help and support. Youth work, at its best, saves lives; it turns lives around; it lifts people up and it helps to create good, conscientious citizens.

So, what do we do now?

How do we restore and revitalise youth services-both Council-run and those led by the Third Sector? And how do we ensure that the money which is made available by Government is properly shared out and doesn't just go to the Government's faoured youth scheme NCS (National Youth Agency.)
