Sal Brinton supports the Trans & Intersex Health Charter at 2015 Autumn Conference
The Liberal Democrats are calling for equality law to be extended to include protections for intersex people. On 26th October, celebrated internationally as Intersex Awareness Day, the party's LGBT+ body has called for the Government to make intersex status a protected characteristic under equalities law.
Speaking for LGBT+ Lib Dems, secretary Dave Page said, "Intersex people are often overlooked while discussing LGBT+ equalities law, but there's a desperate need for recognition and legal protections. On this day, it is appropriate to repeat the Liberal Democrats' call for equalities law to protect intersex people."
The Liberal Democrats' Trans and Intersex Health Charter, passed by their Autumn Conference in 2015, also supports intersex people's right to access to gender identity services to help treat gender dysphoria, experienced by between 8-20% of intersex people. It further calls for an end to unnecessary surgery on intersex children to align them with binary sex characteristics; in 2016, the United Nations and Council of Europe's human rights bodies also called for this.
