High Peak Liberal Democrats
Vince Cable MP, leader of the Liberal Democrats, welcomed this year's LGBT History Month which begins today.
"I'm delighted to once again support LGBT History Month which is an important celebration of identity, freedom and equality. Each year this month gives us reason to celebrate the progress made in the ongoing battle for equality.
"This year marks 50 years since the Stonewall Riots - a pivotal moment in LGBT+ history. The riots not only served as a catalyst for the modern movement for LGBT+ equality but also gave rise to various civil rights organisations who have gone on to promote diversity and equality.
"Sadly, homosexuality is still criminal in over 70 countries and across the globe trans rights are under attack. As a country we must be intolerant to bigotry in all its forms. Let us use this month to remind ourselves that the values that bind us together are far stronger than the forces of hate that try and fail to tear us apart."
