This month is the last opportunity under the Withdrawal Agreement to prolong the standstill period during which the UK continues to benefit from EU common rules.
Without an extension and as the clock runs down EU negotiators will have even more leverage over the UK side on the terms of our future relationship.
If there is not an agreement by the end of this year it will mean chaos for thousands of firms that trade across Europe and another huge hit to our own economy that we can ill afford.
