Harry Burfoot
Harry Burfoot, a long standing resident of New Mills and former Councillor, died at his home on 12th February aged 90. During the war he served in the Royal Airforce and met his wife Audrey when posted to Stockport, and they subsequently lived in Hazel Grove.
In 1959 Harry had a career change and moved to New Mills with his family to become a familiar figure at their newsagent's shop at the corner of Albion Road and Union Road
A life-long Liberal and Liberal Democrat he was elected firstly to New Mills Town Council and then to High Peak Borough Council where he was a member for many years. He was also a member of the Community Health Council, and served a term as Chair of New Mills Town Council. He was a founder member of the New Mills Civic Amenity Society and closely involved with New Mills Heritage Centre.
He and his wife Audrey were active members of New Mills Volunteer Centre from its beginning. Harry was a committee member and became a trustee, and served as a volunteer until recent years. He also participated as a member of the Art group, while Audrey ran the Over 60s group. Audrey died six years ago.
Harry leaves two sons, Martin and David, and two granddaughters Clare and Alice.
Harry had a diffident manner, though he was always willing to share his considerable knowledge, particularly of politics and history, and he was regarded with respect and affection by all who knew him.
