The EMAS board decision to establish a mini hub ambulance station in the High Peak along with community ambulance posts has been welcomed by High Peak Liberal Democrat leader, David Lomax.

Elizabeth (Beth) Atkins

"The original proposal to base our ambulances near Chesterfield was clearly unrealistic, and the weather over the last few weeks has clearly highlighted the need for our ambulances to be based in High Peak. It was immediately evident when EMAS held the public consultation on the 'one size fits all' proposal that it would be detrimental to rural areas like High Peak. It is a shame the board has caused so much concern and heartache for residents and staff over the last few months despite assurances that the original proposals would be revised."

Originally concerns were raised by New Mills County Cllr Beth Atkins 12 months ago over the poor response times, particularly in central High Peak, stressing that it was literally "a matter of life and death for High Peak residents". And speaking to a senior EMAS manager 4 months ago she was told that the board would be rethinking its options.

Borough Cllrs Ray Atkins and David Lomax were the only High Peak councillors to attend an open consultation meeting held by EMAS on 11th March. "This was a perfect opportunity to emphasise the need for a daily service hub and community posts across High Peak. I'm glad that the board listened to us", said Cllr Lomax, "but the most important thing now is to improve the level of response times in High Peak."
